About 8 months ago I officially quit coffee and made the switch over to matcha. Why you might ask since I LOVE coffee? Because it was making me feel horrible. I wasn’t sleeping through the night, I was having really tough crashing in the middle of day that made me want to crawl into bed around 3pm, and maybe the worst part, I was feeling even more anxious than usual. So one day I said enough is enough, and I haven’t looked back.
A big part of why it was so hard for me to quit is that I love the morning ritual, so to fill the void I created a new one. I created a video here of my iced version, but in the winter I’ve been loving it warm like a latte.
I love this routine and when I can, taking my time to slow down and whisk the tea and froth the milk. It has quickly become an essential part of my day and so quick and easy that I can make them between Zoom meetings! Details below:
You will need the following:
1 tsp + Ceremonial grade matcha
A whisking bowl for your Matcha. Mine is by Mica Spicka for Matchaful but there’s so many beautiful ones out there.
A sieve (this is VERY important) - I got mine in a matcha kit
1/4 cup of hot water
1 cup or so of nut milk
Optional: 1 tsp locally sourced honey!
So here’s how I do it:
Start with 1 heaping teaspoon of a Ceremonial grade matcha. I personally love rocky’s matcha and Matchaful but any Ceremonial grade matcha works!
Take your heaping teaspoon of matcha powder and mix around in your sieve to make sure there are no clumps. This step is so important in my opinion and makes a big difference in my end result!
Add about a quarter cup of hot water (not boiling) to your bowl with your matcha and whisk that until frothy. It’s important that when doing this motion, you work in a back-and-fourth motion to create a smooth and frothy consistency.
This is when you can add about a teaspoon of honey and let is dissolve in the hot water. This step is optional, and some days I switch it up and do or don’t add honey. I’ve been using my favorite local honey lately and it just reminds me how thankful I am to be able to have access to and consume such beautiful foods everyday.
Lastly, you’re going to want to pour your matcha over your glass of nut milk and ice, or mug with heated milk. Some of my favorite brands have been Malk Organics and Táche Pistachio Milk but you can use any nut milk or regular milk- whichever you prefer. Give it a little stir, grab your favorite metal straw, and sip away!
Let me know in the comments if you give this a try and what recipe you want to see next!
